You can work to be a part of saving our Earth. Learn about environmental justice and two incredible sustainability pioneers in this post!
Introduction:
The world of sustainability is making great strides thanks to all kinds of people across the globe. Bringing awareness to issues such as global warming helps us make change at a community level, and leads us on a path to a greener lifestyle. Let’s take a look at some scientists who helped inspire sustainability!
Sustainability Pioneers:
Rachel Carson
As a scientist and a naturalist, Rachel Carson studied the environmental impact of fertilizers, and wrote a book about the damage that they cause. This book is titled Silent Spring and has been incredibly influential in raising public awareness. This novel was a major spark for the environmental movement, which eventually led to the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA helps to ensure that we have clean water, land, and air by reviewing chemicals in the marketplace, introducing federal laws that protect human health, and more. In her novel, Carson questions whether people should have control over nature, and what damage this can cause.

Wangari Maathai
Known as Africa’s “tree woman,” Wangari Maathai was a conservationist who founded the Green Belt Movement in Kenya. This movement focuses on environmental conservation and reversing the effects of climate change. Since its creation in 1977, this movement and its volunteers have planted over 10 million trees to help prevent soil erosion. Maathai was also an advocate for women’s rights, and her work helped to give many women places to work and provided firewood for them. By just starting at a local level and improving the climate issues there, Maathai was able to inspire change on a much broader scale!
