Jasmin Moghbeli reached for the stars, both figuratively and literally. Her determination and passion for the world around her led her to become a Marine Corps Officer and NASA astronaut. She is the commander of the 2023 SpaceX Mission.
early life:
Jasmin Moghbeli was born on June 24, 1983, in West Germany. Her family then moved to New York where she went to high school. Moghbeli went to space camp throughout high school and was very involved with sports, such as lacrosse. She attended MIT and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering. After graduating, she continued her education at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Maryland, where she received her license to become a test pilot.
Marine Corps:
Moghbeli joined the Marine Corps in 2005 where she became a Marine Corps test pilot. During her time in the military, she piloted over 150 combat missions, flying the AH-1 Super Cobra Helicopter. Her remarkable skill led her to fly some of the most advanced military aircraft, such as the MV-22 Osprey.
NASA:
In June 2017, Moghbeli was selected for a two-year astronaut training. After graduating in January 2020, she became a member of NASA’s Artemis program. She was part of a team working towards sending humans to the moon, and eventually sending them to Mars. Last March, she became a commander of the SpaceX Crew-7, a spacecraft going to the International Space Station. This flight launched just a couple of weeks ago on August 27th!
Awards and Recognitions:
Throughout her time in the military, Jasmin Moghbeli received four air medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, and many more awards. Moghbeli is an inspiration, and we are excited to see her continue to make progress and discoveries in our society.
