Think Like a Scientist:

  1. What if you used a different type of rice? Do you think some rice dances more than others? Try it out and let us know in the comments below!!

  2. What if you add more vinegar and baking soda? Can you make your rice dance even more?? Try out a few different amounts and let other scientists know the best ones in the comments below!!

How it Works:

You just created an acid-base reaction! What do you think was the acid? Thats right! Vinegar! So, what is the base in your experiment? Baking soda!

When you added the vinegar and the baking soda together, you created a chemical reaction! After combining, the vinegar and baking soda reacted and formed a gas.

These gas bubbles don’t like to be stuck in liquid, so they float to the top to escape into the air! As the bubbles float up, they bring the rice with them! But, the rice is heavy, so it ends up falling back to the bottom of the cup!

Thus, you get DANCING RICE!

Chemists are scientists who learn all about chemical reactions. Do you want to be a chemist? Let us know what kind of scientist you want to be in the comments below!!
